- Australia in 2010 will not be accepting Firend Presupports after May 31, 2008. We will continue to accept ordinary Presupports leading up to the vote for site selection at Denvention 3. http://www.denver2008.com. For information about Australia in 2010, a bid for the world science fiction convention to be held in Melbourne in late August 2010 can be found at www.australia2010.org
Want to support the Australian worldcon Bid? Then become a member of this year’s worldcon, Denvention 3 and vote in the site selection for 2010. Information about how to become a member of Denvention 3 and how to vote in the Site Selection may be found on Denvention 3’s website http://www.denver2008.com. [What is a Firend? Hasty artwork by a tipsy Hugo award-winning fan artist for a rush bid T-shirt resulted in the misspelling of “Friend” as “Firend” (as in “Friends don’t let friends run worldcons”). The initial bidding group liked the idea of this unique name for our special generous friends-of-the-bid membership level.]

- In its first few days The Host by Stephenie Meyer has been outselling the latest James Patterson novel (Nielsen Bookscan). Since its released last Thursday, all major Australian book chains have placed re-orders and as at 1:26pm Friday 2 May an additional 6,000 copies have been shipped. The book is currently in urgent re-printing. Major book retailers are reporting sales of over 100 copies a day. The Host is Stephenie Meyer’s first stand-alone book, a gripping novel of love and betrayal, set in the future when the fate of humanity is at stake. As well as publishing The Host and the final instalment of the Twilight saga called Breaking Dawn in August, Meyer’s year will be capped off by a major motion picture event. Summit Entertainment will bring Twilight to the big screen, directed by Catherine Hardwicke (”Thirteen,” “Lords of Dogtown”) and starring Kristen Stewart (”Into The Wild”) and Robert Pattinson (”Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”). It will be released around the world at the end of this year.

Awards will be given in 30 categories covering the full range of subjects, styles and age groups that children’s books are written and published in today.
- The Quentaris Chronicles reached 26 titles with Lothian/Hachette. Book one in the new series (Quentaris – Quest of the Lost City) was released in March. In The Spell of Undoing, by Paul Collins, Quentaris is uprooted from its bedrock and flung via a vortex into the rift worlds. Quentaris becomes a floating city, sails an’ all, drifting from one world to another, searching for Amlas, its home-world. Alas, Tolrush, its rival state, has also been drawn into the rift worlds. Blaming Quentaris for this unfortunate happenstance, Tolrush is forever seeking to destroy Quentaris. Throw in plenty of magic, action, intrigue and interior illustrations, and you have a whole new scenario. Let the fun begin! Look out for The Equen Queen, Book two in this exciting new Quentaris series. The Equen Queen is from the award-winning Alyssa Brugman and is a compelling addition to the classic, unfolding story of Quentaris.
